Description

Organic Maca Powder: Ancient Peruvian Power for Modern Wellness

Our organic Maca powder is one of our best-selling products, and for good reason! This remarkable root has been cherished in Peru for over 2,000 years for its powerful nutritional profile and energizing properties.

Sourced from the Andes mountains of Peru, Maca thrives at extreme altitudes — growing at elevations of up to 14,000 feet, where few other plants can survive. This resilience mirrors its incredible ability to nourish and energize the body.

Key Features:

  • Pure & Organic: Our Maca powder is grown at high altitude in Peru, harvested with care, and processed without heat to preserve its full nutritional potency.
  • Powerful Adaptogen: Like Aloe Vera, Maca is a potent adaptogen, traditionally used to support the body's natural ability to adapt to physical, emotional, and environmental stressors.
  • Peruvian Tradition: A staple in Peruvian cuisine, Maca powder has long been valued for its role in promoting energy and vitality. The potato-like tuber can be baked, or the ground-up powder is added to meals.
  • Plant Sterols: Naturally rich in plant sterols, Maca is prized for its nutrient density and role in supporting an active lifestyle.

Nutritional Benefits:

  • Mineral-Rich: Maca powder is an excellent source of calcium and magnesium, vital for bone health, muscle function, and nervous system support.
  • Amino Acid Profile: Contains many essential amino acids, which play a key role in supporting the body's natural repair processes.
  • Vitamin Boost: Provides a natural source of B vitamins, known for their role in energy production and mental clarity.
  • Energizing and Restorative: Traditionally used as part of a balanced diet to support energy levels and endurance, Maca is popular with athletes and those with busy lifestyles.

Kate Magic's Favourite:

"I really would put free maca on the NHS for all women. It's a game-changer whatever cycle of womanhood you're in - puberty, menstruation, coming off birth control, pregnancy, breastfeeding, perimenopause, menopause. At this point in my life I take 1 tbsp 4-5 times a week, either in a mylk or a latte."

Further Information

Maca has been seen in historical references as early as 1549, where Juan Tello de Sotomayor, a Spanish Conquistador, describes receiving maca roots as a tribute form the Indians for the purposes of improving fertility of Spanish cattle.

From there, it is rarely heard of again until 1846, when a German Botanist, Wilhelm Gerhard Walpers appoints its botanical name after thorough scientific studies for the first time on this Andean crop; and so, Maca was called “Lepedium meyenii, Walp.”. Even with its scientific discovery, Maca would not be harvested by humans and would not gain its popularity until much later in the future.

It is believed that maca was domesticated in San Blas, Junín, between 1,300 and 2,000 years ago, but little is known about its origin, except that it was grown at high altitudes (above 4,000m over sea level), where no other food was found.

Research began on growing maca as a food source in 1971, however, it wasn't until 1999 that maca was developed as a sustainable agricultural activity! This is on the Junin plateau, the perfect site for growing maca.

How To Use

  • Start Small: Begin with 1 teaspoon of Maca powder per day and gradually increase to 1 tablespoon as desired. It's common to get a detox reaction when starting with Maca, so go slowly.
  • Best with Fats: Maca powder combines particularly well with fats, enhancing its rich, malty flavour. Try blending it with nut milks, coconut oil, or cacao butter in your recipes.
  • Quick Consumption with Water: If mixing Maca with water, be sure to drink it within a couple of hours, as it doesn’t keep well in this form.
  • Smoothies & Shakes: Blend into smoothies, protein shakes, or elixirs for a nourishing boost.
  • Hot Drinks: Stir into cacao, matcha, or coffee for a warming pick-me-up.
  • Raw Chocolate Recipes: Maca’s malty notes pair beautifully with raw cacao, making it a fantastic addition to homemade chocolate treats.
  • Porridge & Cereals: Add to warm breakfasts for a comforting, energizing start to your day.
  • Raw Desserts: Incorporate into cakes and cookies for a rich flavour twist.
